Frankly, Stefan is surprised at how things had turned out.

Given the bad blood between he and Rebekah at the moment, he thought that she would be the last person to bid on him. Then again, given the person that kicked things off, he probably shouldn't be as surprised. Katherine isn't a favorite among the Originals, so taking the opportunity to one up both her and Caroline is probably a plus.

Still, with their history, he can't help but wonder.

Stefan Salvatore, however, is a man who honors his commitments. Even if it was his idiot brother and not him who made them. He pulls up to the Mikaelson house at the arranged time, dressed for his date. He planned something neutral, something he knows they both love, and he hopes that will be enough for a civil evening.

He takes a breath, smooths down the front of his shirt, and knocks on the door.

"At least, when it comes down to it, you'd be willing to risk just about anything for your brother." She admires that about the Salvatores. More and more she realizes that while she would do anything for Niklaus, it's not a two way street.

He nods. "We're all we've got." The he smirks. "Even if I do die one day, I'm fairly certain that Damon is going to be the one on the other end of the stake."

Even if they kill each other doing it, in the end it's still going to be them.

"Probably." Says the girl who's been daggered by her brother before. It's always family, in the end.

"I wish it weren't that way, though. I miss simply being his brother. Now everything I do for him needs an ulterior motive."

"It's hard, how things get changed over the years." She remembers when she used to go watch Elijah and Klaus play and fight with one another -- now you could barely get them in the same room together, and the fighting is hardly play anymore.

"What we are doesn't making holding on to things easy."

"No, it doesn't. It's too easy to lose sight of things."

"Or hold on to them too tightly."

[easily]

"Sometimes, both."

"Both never really works out the way you want it to."

"Few things ever do."

"Some do. At least for a little while."

"It's always a pleasant surprise, when they do."

"It is. The world could use a little more surprise."

"It becomes harder to be surprised by things when you've lived long enough."

"People do tend to fall into the same cycles."

"History tend to repeat itself"

"You'd think that we would learn from our mistakes."

"You'd think so." And yet so often, none of them did.

It's because they think they'll be smarter this time around. That they'll avoid falling into the same traps, but it's never as easy as it seems.

"Funny how it never works out."

[easily]

Her lips quirk upward, though the smile is humorless. "I'm not sure funny is the word I used."

His lips quirk a bit as well. "I think it's a little funny. In a way that's not funny at all."

"In the way that's actually kind of sad?" She asks, tilting her head a little.

"Sad would be one word for it."

[easily]

"What would you use?"
